Maricopa County Jail Lawsuit

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

The Phoenix New Times is reporting that a judge has ruled against Sheriff Joe Apraio in the latest suit about the treatment of his inmates in the county jails.

Hill represented the “class” of all pretrial detainees awaiting court trials in Arpaio’s jails. The ACLU also worked closely with Hill on the case. Margaret Winter, associate director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s National Prison Project, said the ruling is a big win.

“Sheriff Arpaio’s horrendous treatment of detainees, especially those with severe medical and mental-health problems, has caused terrible suffering for years,” Winter said. “Judge Wake’s decision should serve as a reminder that even a man who brags about being the ‘toughest sheriff in America’ has to abide by the Constitution.”

“Sheriff Arpaio’s actions have gone unchecked for too long, and this ruling is a significant step toward much-needed accountability,” said Daniel Pochoda, attorney with the ACLU of Arizona. “It’s time that the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and all of the residents of Maricopa County take action to end his abusive practices.”

Could it finally be that there is change in the air in Maricopa County? The Sheriff is up for reelection in less than two weeks. While up to this point he has seemed politically insulated based on his popularity with voters, it may be that the tide is shifting. Only time will tell.

Maricopa County Jail Infirmary – Alternative to Tent City Jail

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

If you are too sick to spend time in Tent City, there is an alternative. For those requiring 24 hour skilled Nursing care, Correctional Health Services is the accomodation.

You qualify if you can’t perform the activities of daily living on your own and/or require 24 hour skilled nursing care.

The major drawback is that work release is not available. For those needing to report to Correctional Health Services, they require the following be faxed or mailed at least seven days prior to starting:

  1. A copy of the order of confinement;
  2. A printed list from the pharmacy or medical provider of all current medications. This list must be from within the last 30 days;
  3. A letter from your medical provider describing your medical condition and special needs or equipment;
  4. Your current medical provider’s contact info including name, address and phone number;
  5. Your contact information where you can be reached prior to your self-surrender date.

Here is where you send it:

  • Fax: 602-455-6147
  • Email: Chsselfsurrenders@mail.maricopa.gov
  • Mail: CHS Self Surrender Office, Correctional Health Services, Lower Buckeye Jail Infirmary, 3250 W Lower Buckeye Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85009

If you need more information on the Maricopa County Jail self-surrender, you can call: 602-876-6884

If you are not sure if the jail infirmary is a viable alternative to Tent City, ask your attorney or the clerk of the court.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio Video – Not DUI related

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Here is a video of Sheriff Joe being interviewed on immigration issues. Sheriff Joe runs the Tent City jail in Phoenix, where even first offense DUI convictions in Arizona result in minimum 45 day jail sentences in some cases. Sheriff Joe is famous for a number of things, but for people who get DUI convictions in the Phoenix area, he may well become their most remembered host.
