Superbowl leads to 125 Arrests for DUI by Washington State Patrol

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

The Washington State Patrol reported that 125 drivers in Washington were arrested for DUI late Sunday and early Monday after the Steelers defeated the Cardinals in Superbowl XLIII.  This is a 67% increase from the 75 arrests that occurred over the same weekend in 2008.  In 2005, when the Seahawks were in Superbowl XL, there were 128 arrests for DUI by the Washington State Patrol.

It is very common for people to be arrested for DUI after attending professional sports games in Seattle.  Many of my clients have been arrested for DUI after attending Seahawks, Mariners and the former Sonics games.  I have also represented several people who have attended Huskies and Cougars games.  While NCAA rules do not allow for alcohol to be served at sporting events, it is typical for many people to consume alcohol both prior and after these games.  While the Superbowl was played thousands of miles away in Tampa, Florida, television ratings indicate that the game was watched by millions in private homes or in restaurants/bars.

To many people, a sporting event and a “cold one” go hand-in hand.  Much of the advertising at the event or on the television features different types of alcohol .  The excitement (or turmoil) of the event causes people to lose count of how much they had consumed.  Or people believe they have waited enough time after the end of the game before getting behind the wheel.  A DUI arrest can happen to anyone who consumes alcohol and operates a motor vehicle.   With this in mind, people need to plan accordingly.  Whether it is the elation caused by a person’s team winning the game, or the devastation caused by the defeat, a DUI arrest will definitely create a serious dilemma in one’s life.
